eco Demands: New Commission President Must Raise The Potential Of The Internet Industry For The EU

On the occasion of today’s election of Jean-Claude Junckers as the new EU Commission President, eco Director for Policy and Law Oliver Süme comments:

“The European Internet industry is one of the most important growth markets in Europe, and yet the EU is in danger of falling behind countries like China, India and the USA. The new Commission President faces the challenge of raising the potential of the European Internet industry and developing the EU into a digital protagonist. A priority here is the realization of a harmonized European single market for electronic communication. Therefore we welcome Junckers’ announcement that he intends to set Europe’s Digital Agenda as a centerpiece of his presidency. The appointment of an Internet Commissioner would be an important first step towards a consolidated, coherent and strategic European Internet and network policy.”
