Transatlantic Dialogue Part III – The Future of EU-US Privacy Shield

i2Coalition – Internet Infrastructure Coalition & eco – Association of the Internet Industry

invite you to frame the future of personal data protection on both sides of the Atlantic.

On May 22, 2019 at 1pm, key individuals in government, industry and academia will converge on Capitol Hill to discuss the legal frameworks that could make or break the Internet economy on both sides of the Atlantic.

The leading associations of the Internet Industry in Europe and the United States, the i2Coalition and eco will host its final roundtable in its three-part Transatlantic Dialogue series, bringing together high-level individuals from the United States House of Representatives, the European Parliament, and the German Bundestag, along with data protection experts, Internet industry leaders, and leading Internet associations and policy think tanks.

The EU-US Privacy Shield governs the protection of personal data transferred from a member state of the European Union to the United States. For the Internet economy on both sides of the Atlantic, a consensual and long-term data protection regime is a necessary basis for any business model in which personal data is stored and processed across borders. However, the EU-US Privacy Shield has been criticized since its launch in 2016.

And as alternative models to the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) are discussed, it’s necessary to evaluate any new regulations in conversation with EU-US Privacy Shield.

Many companies and civil society organizations seek effective regulation that protects personal data and long-term legal certainty around data laws. This is an opportunity to work toward alignment of the necessary framework conditions in the European Union and the United States.

The previous roundtables happened in Brussels on February 7, 2019, and Berlin February 12, 2019.
